Star Crossed

“Ow!  Shit.”  Tom Paris cussed softly.  As he landed and landed hard.  On wouldn’t you know it, a hard surface?

Beside him he heard an audibly thud.  That would be the body of his Commander as he too landed and landed just as hard, right next to him.

He moved quickly to help Chakotay.  Hoping the Commander would hit him to hard. “I’m sorry, Commander.  I know you said not to touch the stone.  I’m sorry.  I’m really sorry.”  Tom looked up his eyes widening. “Oh-oh, I don’t think we’re in Kansas anymore, Toto.”

They landed in a room.  A really, really big room.  With the biggest windows Tom had ever seen in his life.  This really big room with the really big windows had what Tom counted as twelve beings of unknown origin.  There were a few humanoid-looking types mixed in there.  All twelve where currently starting at them curiously.  With absolutely no fear.

“Hmm-Hello,” Tom said hesitantly.

The beings didn’t look particularly hostile, except for a bald, dark-skinned man currently scowling at them. But they didn’t seemed inclined to greet them with open arms either.

“Hmm, Commander,” Tom said, pulling on Chakotay’s sleeve.

“Lt. Paris, I really wish you would listen to me once in awhile.  When I said don’t touch the stone.  I meant don’t fucking touch the god-damn stone.”  Chakotay hissed at him angrily, jerking his arm away from Tom.

“Chakotay, I think we got more problems than me touching the god-damn stone.”

“Padawan trouble have you, hmm?”  A little green being with pointy ears asked, chuckling softly.

.

Tom took an instant liking to it.  A feel of warmth surrounded him like a big, warm fuzzy invisible blanket.  Before he realized what he was doing he was going toward it.

He gasped stopping short.  The feeling of welcome and warm fuzziness vanishing as his movement toward the green being was taken as an act of hostility.

Suddenly the room was filled with rods of colored light that hummed menacingly at them.  Some type of weapon was Tom guess. More than a guess by the way they were all brandishing them.

“Tom,” Chakotay shouted in alarm.  “For Goddess sakes, stay still.  Don’t you dare move.

“I…I didn’t mean any harm, Commander.  I only wanted to say hello.”

“You need to think before you act.  Especially when dealing with potentially hostile races.  How many times have I warned you about that?”

Tom sighed heavily as he was shoved in back of the Commander and unceremoniously pushed back against a wall.  Or was it a pair of really big doors?  “A zillion, Commander.  A zillion.”

“Well, when is it going to sink in?  When you get yourself or someone else killed?”  Chakotay looked over at the beings staring at them.  Using all the diplomatic skills in his possession and a pair of killer dimples, he smiled at them.

“I’m sorry.  He didn’t mean any harm.  I’m Commander Chakotay and this is Lt. Tom Paris we’re from the Starship Voyager.  We come in peace.  Even if we don’t know where we are.  We come in peace.”

“Know this we do,” The little green alien replied.

Tom tried to see what was happening. It wasn’t allowed as his Commander was still in overprotective mode. Tom settled for resting his chin on Chakotay’s shoulder to watch.  After all he couldn’t move being squished in back of the Commander’s really warm body and he wanted to see.  That got him a funny look, but it was allowed.  Odd that.

“Then why the hostile weapons?”  Chakotay asked quietly.

“My fellow council members also react before thinking, they do.  I am called Yoda.  And you are on Coruscant.  In the temple of the Jedi.”

“Tom, have you heard of a race called Jedi?”

“Nope.  It’s new to me.  But there’s still a lot we don’t know about the Delta Quadrant.”

“We’re sorry to have dropped in on you the way we did.  But if you could tell us how to get back to our ship we won’t bother you any more.”  Chakotay told Yoda.  “We really mean no harm.  We don’t even have our weapons.  We must have lost them in that vortex we traveled through.”

“Problem have we.  No idea how came you to be here.  Work on problem, we shall.  Our guest you will be, until solution we find.”

With that Yoda turned to the dark-skinned humanoid male.  “To the council chambers call Jedi Knight Qui-Gon Jinn and his apprentice Obi Wan Kenobi.”

Tom was itching to talk to Yoda.  But after the mess he’d made of things he thought he’d better stay where he was.  Besides squished against the Commander’s big strong body wasn’t so bad.  It was kind of nice actually.  Still Tom looked over at Yoda and sighed wistfully.

“Tom Paris come to me you may,” Yoda told him, his tiny ears twitching back and forth.

Tom gave Chakotay his best puppy dog eyes.  Silently asking for permission.

The Commander looked over at the council member who’d by now put away their weapons.  Still unsure if he could trust them.

“Safe is Tom.  No harm befall him will.  Trust me, you may,” Yoda reassured him.

“Alright.  Go Tom, but don’t touch anything.  That’s what got us in to this mess.”

“Okay.  Thank, Cha,” Tom replied happily, smiling as he approached Yoda.  “Hi.”  He said softly, shyly.

“Greeting to you, young Tom,” Yoda told him.

Tom sat on the step looking up, respectfully up at him.  For the first time in his life Tom found himself tongue-tied.  He didn’t know what to say or how to say it.  Yoda was…how could Tom describe him?  Yoda was old, Tom sensed it.  And wise.  Wiser than anyone he’d ever come across.  Wiser than even Chakotay.

Tom felt the waves of calming serenity coming off Yoda.  Warming and oh-so-gentle.  Tom let it wash over him easing the pain and hurt deep in his soul.  He sighed softly as he met Yoda’s gentle brown eyes.

“Troubled still are you?”

“No, Yoda.”

“A hard road traveled, have you?”

Tom didn’t bother denying it.  He knew instinctively Yoda would sense a lie.  “Yes, Yoda.”

“Hurt by betrayal and self doubt are you.”

Tom felt his eyes fill with tears.  “Yes, Yoda.”

“Much caused by the man behind you.”

Tom heard Chakotay small gasp of surprise.  “A lot of it was my fault.  My image has not been the best in the world.  Or worlds rather.  Maybe universes would fit better.”

Yoda chuckled.  “Perhaps.  Work on this we shall, while here you are.”

Yoda looked over at Chakotay.  “Come closer you to may, Commander.  Bite I will not.  Or as Padawan mine would have you know, bite not hard I do.”

Chakotay came closer as he was bid.  Sitting respectfully next to Tom. “Can you tell us about your world, Yoda?”

Yoda nodded.  “This we can do.  Wait it must, for the moment.  Tell me how you came here to be?”

Tom felt his skin flush in embarrassment.  “It was my fault.  I touched a glowing lavender stone.”

“Tell us your tale, you will.  Mace, please refreshments we must have for our guest, much they have to tell us.”  Yoda told the dark-skinned man who nodded motioning toward the side, still scowling.  “Begin your tale you will.”

Chakotay nodded.  “We’re from the Alpha Quadrant.  A being we know as the Caretaker was looking for someone to take care of a humanoids race called the Ocampas because he was dying.  He took us from our world and everything we knew in attempt to find someone compatible to take over his responsibilities before he died.”

“Failed he did?”  Yoda asked as he passed Tom a big glass of something green.  Tom liked it, tasted like fruit punch.  And a plate of cookies.  The cookies Tom really liked.  Little orange things that tasted crisp and tart.  Really good.

“Yes.  Thank-you,” Chakotay said accepting a glass of the same green liquid.  He took a drink before beginning to speak again.  “We could have gotten home if we had used the array-the device he used to get us to the Delta Quadrant, but in doing so it would have put the Ocampas at risk by hostiles.  Our Captain did the only thing she could, she destroyed it. Marooning us in the Delta quadrant and 70,000 light years from home.”

Yoda nodded.  “Honorable your captain is.”

“Yes.  But because we are along way from home and the facilities to repair our ship we are constantly looking for a way to keep us going.  Minerals, foodstuffs, anything to help us on our journey home.”

“How does this lavender stone come into this?”  Mace asked.  Fascinated in the tale despite himself.

Tom handed Chakotay the plate of cookies.  “Try these, they’re really good.  I think this is where I jump in anyway.  We were exploring an uninhabited planet. Our sensors detected it had foodstuff we could use to restock our kitchen. We found wheat,  little round apple-looking things that taste like grapes and even some fish.  The planet was truly beautiful.  Almost reminded me of Earth.  My home planet.  Captain Janeway decided to give everyone shore leave.  We found a cave with some ancient writings on it.  The Commander and I were looking at it in the hope that there was something in the writing that would help us on our journey home.  On one of the cave walls right in the middle of the writings was this stone.  When we got close to it-it started to glow.  The closer we got the brighter it glowed.  Chakotay told me not to touch it, but I couldn’t help myself.  It was as if it was calling me.”  Tom sighed heavily.  “Well I touched it and here we are.”

“And here you are,” Yoda repeated.

“Again with no idea on how to get back to our ship or even where we are in relation to the universe as we know it.”  Tom said softly.  He turned to look at Chakotay who’d been quietly watching.  “I’m sorry, Commander.  I’m really sorry.”

Chakotay met Tom’s sad blue eyes.  “I know you are, Tom.  Don’t worry.  We’ll find a way back.”  He squeezed Tom’s arm reassuringly.  “And think of it this way.  It’s not all bad.  We’ve made some new friends.”

“That you have, Tom Paris and Commander Chakotay.  That you have,” Yoda told them both.

Suddenly there was a commotion and a set of giant doors flew opened.  Allowing two heavily robed beings in.

“Ah, good.  Tis time arrived, you did,” Yoda said with satisfaction.

The two came forward to kneel in front of Yoda.  Bowing deeply, respectfully before pushing back the hood of their robes.

Tom gasped.  They had to be two of the most beautiful males he’d ever seen. One was tall.  Really, tall, with long, brown hair, heavily streaked with grey.  And a pair of the most beautiful, serene blue eyes he’d ever seen.

The other was shorter.  With blond, reddish hair and a pair of eyes that seemed to change colors.  From blue to grey, to green.  Really pretty. Skin the color of pale milk.  Warm and silky looking.  Touchable.

Tom suddenly wished that he didn’t have a thing for his tawny-skinned Commander.  Chakotay didn’t even seem to know he was alive anyway.  Well, except to yell at him.  Which he supposed was better that nothing.  But he’d really rather not get yelled at.  He’d rather the Commander love him.

Tom sighed softly to himself.  That was not to be.  At least not in this lifetime.  Maybe not even in the next, but he could hope.  Couldn’t he?

Unrequited love sucked a big one.  He could at least for the time being remain faithful to the hope of someday having the Commander’s love.  He hadn’t fooled around with anyone in months.  Hoping that Chakotay would notice and maybe want to take a chance on him.

Besides he could look.  He wasn’t going to touch.  Really he wasn’t.  But ooh-they were gorgeous.  Especially the tall one.

“The tall one Qui Gon Jinn..  Jedi Master is he.  The shorter, Obi Wan Kenobi.  Padawan to Qui Gon Jinn.  Pretty eyes has he, hmm?”

Tom turned startled toward Yoda.  Could Yoda read his mind?  If he could he was in deep shit. Chakotay was going to kill him.

“Gorgeous they are-are they not?”  Yoda told him, chuckling.

Tom felt his face flame.  Oh god-he wished for a chair to crawl under.  He was so dead.  Chakotay was going to kill him.  Cut him to little, bitty pieces and hide them where no one would ever find them.  He was so dead.  So very dead.  He didn’t dare look at his Commander. He didn’t dare.

Instead he looked up at the two Jedi, who were looking at him curiously.  “Cookie?”  He asked weakly, holding up the tray.
